Immobilisers wanted for all cars

The Security Association wants immobilising technology to be fitted to all cars.

A proposal to introduce the compulsory installation of immobilisers on imported vehicles is being considered by the Minister of Transport.

The association says thousands of vehicles are stolen across New Zealand each year, including 8000 in Auckland alone.

Chairman Peter Freeman says around three-quarters of stolen vehicles are taken by opportunists and the rest are stolen for used parts.

He says vehicle thefts in Western Australia fell by 23% when a compulsory immobiliser rule was introduced there.

At the very least, Mr Freeman says immobilisers should be fitted to all newly imported or manufactured cars.
