Policemen charged with assaulting students

4:28 pm on 21 September 2009

Three police officers have appeared again in the Auckland District Court jointly charged with assaulting two university students.

Chris Renata, Patrick Garty and Wiremu Bowers-Rakatau, who were off duty at the time, are accused of attacking the pair in an apartment building in March.

They were suspended last month, but have since returned to restricted duties.

Mr Renata pleaded not guilty on Monday to a charge of common assault. His lawyer asked for the matter to be fast tracked as Mr Renata is due to be deployed overseas early next year.

Mr Garty pleaded not guilty to three charges of assault. Mr Bowers-Rakatau was remanded until next month without plea.
