Customs to appeal ERA ruling

6:16 am on 13 August 2010

The Customs Service will appeal against reinstatement of two Customs officers in Christchurch by the Employment Relations Authority.

John Smith and Glenn Rankin were sacked after being accused of leaking information to a newspaper about searches carried out by a gay colleague.

However, the ERA has found there was insufficient evidence that they were responsible for leaking the information.

The agency ordered that the officers be given their jobs back and paid the wages lost since their dismissal.
