No extra facilities despite double-bunking, court told

The Employment Court has heard that in at least one prison where double-bunking is planned there is no intention to put in more dining facilities or bathrooms.

A union representing prison officers is taking the Department of Corrections to court over the plan to sleep two inmates to a cell.

The Corrections Association has concerns about staff safety in four prisons where double-bunking is planned.

Under cross-examination, the department said there are plans for extra recreational facilities and exercise yards at a prison in Northland, but no provision for extra showers, hand basins or more dining rooms.

The Northland prison holds 88 prisoners, but the number would double under the new plan.

The department agreed under cross-examination that the employment contract for prison officers requires that their agreement for double-bunking to proceed.
