Adventure company cleared over tourist's death

A King Country adventure tourism company has been acquitted on two charges related to the death of an English backpacker in a quad bike accident.

Sarah Bond, of London, died after losing control of the bike which plunged down a 50-metre bank on a farm at Te Anga in August last year.

The 24-year-old died after the bike landed on her.

The Department of Labour prosecuted the Waitomo Big Red Quad Bike Company under the Health and Safety in Employment Act and the Machinery Act.

Judge Tompkins dismissed both charges, following a three-day defended hearing in Te Kuiti District Court this week.

The judge's reasons for his decision have been reserved.
