Environmental group welcomes new protection agency

A leading green group says the new Environment Protection Authority is the first really good move the Government has made.

The authority was established under changes to the Resource Management Act to speed up decisions on nationally significant projects and began operating on Thursday.

Environmental Defence Society chairperson, Gary Taylor, says the new agency has the potential to be as effective as overseas protection agencies in the United States and Scandinavia.

Mr Taylor says in time the EPA could provide valuable national direction for environmental decision-making.
