Heavy snow forecast for parts of South Island

Heavy snow has been forecast for parts of the South Island throughout the weekend.

MetService says there will be falls of up to 500 metres in Fiordland overnight on Friday.

Heavy snow showers are expected in the area for most of Saturday, with up to 30 centimetres likely to accumulate as low as 400 metres.

Lighter snowfalls are expected to 200 metres and could affect the Wilmot Pass Road.

State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound has been closed on Friday night due to heavy snow.
