Murdered girl's father on trial for sex offending

8:28 pm on 5 October 2009

A jury has been told that the father of Karla Cardno, the Lower Hutt schoolgirl brutally raped and murdered 20 years ago, enticed a teenager into prostitution.

Garry Duffin and his wife Sharyn Hills are jointly facing two charges of sexual violation and nine of supplying two teenagers with cannabis. Mr Duffin is also charged with indecently assaulting one of the girls.

The Crown Prosecutor told the High Court in Wellington that in 1991 the complainant and a friend went to a Mount Victoria house where Mr Duffin and Ms Hills ran an escort agency.

It's alleged the girls were given cannabis and asked questions about their virginity.

The Crown alleges that a month later both girls were taken to a Wellington hotel where they were given pills and the complainant was indecently assaulted by both accused.

At a later date Mr Duffin and Ms Hills are said to have invited the complainant to work at their agency. She was 14 at the time.

The trial is set down for a week .
