Wellington poet and short-story writer Alice Miller has won the premier category of the Katherine Mansfield Awards with her story "The Windmill".

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony in Wellington on Monday evening.

Ms Miller, 26, one of the youngest winners of the premier award, wins $10,000 for a love story that award judge Dame Fiona Kidman says "tripped her heart".

Karen Philipps won the novice category with her short story "The Visit", which she began on a creative writing course.

Sixteen-year-old Palmerston North student Emma Robinson won the youth category with a short story based on correspondence with a friend in Japan.

Sponsored by BNZ since their inception, this was the 50th year of the Mansfield awards.
