International buyers are queuing up for a new 13-part children's drama on Maori Television.

Kaitangata Twitch by Margaret Mahy was launched at the junior film and television festival at Cannes at the weekend. It is funded by Te Mangai Paho.

Director Yvonne MacKay told Waatea News from France the series caught the attention of buyers from many countries, keen to see what the acclaimed children's writer had come up with.

McKay said it's the first time Mahy has stepped into the world of Maori, and she has done it very tentatively, with great respect.

Kaitangata Twitch will screen on Maori Television towards the middle of next year.

Waatea News reports it has already been bought by ABC TV in Australia.
