Napier to Taupo road reopens

7:59 pm on 6 October 2009

The Napier to Taupo road has reopened after being closed since Sunday afternoon.

Queues of vehicles on both sides of the closure are now being led by police escort to prevent motorists speeding through the area.

Contractors worked around the clock to clear snow, as well as poles and trees brought down in the storm.

Road conditions remain icy on Tuesday night, and crews will continue applying grit and de-icing product.

The Napier to Taihape road will remain closed overnight on Tuesday.

The Desert Road is also still closed and State Highway 38 between Frasertown and Tuai in Northern Hawke's Bay is now closed too.

Power outages

The lines company Unison says some customers should ready themselves for a number of days without power because of lines and poles brought down by the storm.

Its spokesperson Danny Gough says 410 of its customers were still experiencing outages on Tuesday afternoon.

He says about 100 customers could spend Tuesday night without power, and those in Tarawera, Pohokura and Ngapata could remain cut off for a few more days.
