A funeral service has been held in Matamata for two sisters who died in Samoa in the tsunami that hit the South Pacific last week.

Rebecca Martin, 24, Petria Martin, 22, were staying at the Taufua Beach Resort at Lalomanu and were unable to get to higher ground when the wave hit.

The sisters were among eight New Zealanders killed in Samoa in the disaster that claimed the lives of more than 180 people in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, when an 8.0 magnitude quake triggered a tsunami on 29 September.

A service for the sisters was held at the Matamata College Hall on Saturday morning.
