Waitakere City Mayor Bob Harvey has ordered an inquiry into the council's response to complaints of faulty drains in the street where Aisling Symes was found.
The 20kg lid of a stormwater drain in Longburn Road, Hensderon, where the body of the two-year-old child was discovered on Monday night, was found ajar on 5 October - the day she went missing.
Residents say they have made numerous complaints about flooding that would sometimes cause the lid to come off.
Mr Harvey says he was surprised to learn of the complaints and wants to know if any of them were acted on. He says it's the type of information the police were seeking over the past week.
He says he expects to hear from council officers within two days.
