Prime Minister John Key has promised a Police Association conference the Government will pass legislation getting tough on gangs.
The conference in Wellington is focusing on the growing problem of organised crime.
Mr Key told delegates passing the Gangs and Organised Crime Bill would be a priority.
It would double the penalty for participation in a criminal gang, give the police greater powers to investigate gang members and allow the removal of their forts.
The Prime Minister also said Search and Surveillance and Anti-Money Laundering Bills which are going through Parliament, would also give officers additional powers.
