Overhaul needed to get ACC back on track in 10 years

The head of the Accident Compensation Corporation says an overhaul of the current system is necessary to get it back on track in 10 years.

Proposals announced by the Government on Wednesday will pull back a range of ACC entitlements introduced by the previous Government. Big increases in levies are also planned.

Chairman John Judge told Morning Report the cost of accidents has exceeded levy income by $9 billion during the past five years.

Mr Judge said the ACC board wants to ensure the corporation is properly funded at the end of ten years and can continue without controversy.

He said ACC will ensure that people get what they are entitled to - but only what they are entitled to.
