Paihia patrols to be stepped up after tourist attack

7:36 am on 16 October 2009

Paihia people are to increase community crime patrols in the wake of an assault on two German tourists.

The men were assaulted and robbed in the School Rd carpark area between 3am and 4am on Thursday.

They suffered cuts and bruises, and had passports, clothing, cash and car keys taken.

Community patrol spokesperson Martin Crooks says locals in the Bay of Islands tourist town are horrified by the attack in what is generally a safe place for visitors.

Mr Crooks says the community patrol group has decided to increase its presence on Paihia streets and needs more volunteers.
