Not all prison suspects caught yet - dept

The Corrections Department is not convinced that all the Rimutaka Prison officers suspected of being involved in a ring of corruption and drug dealing have been caught yet.

The officer is charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

A second officer who works at the prison has been arrested and charged for selling cannabis to inmates.

The department says the charges follow a long-running investigation, which is connected with the arrest of another officer on drug-related charges recently.

Chief executive Barry Matthews told Morning Report that Corrections will not hesitate to take action against any staff members suspected of acting unethically.

In August, a female officer was accused of having an affair with an inmate and was dismissed.

Corrections Minister Judith Collins says the arrests show that the Department of Corrections' Professional Standards Unit, which investigates corruption, is working.

She says the issue is taken extremely seriously and she would rather such incidents came to light and were dealt with, than have them hidden.
