Doctors approve health administration changes

The Medical Association approves Government plans to streamline health administration.

Senior hospital doctors also say the changes are a step in the right direction.

About 500 administration jobs are to be cut at the Ministry of Health and district health boards.

Health Minister Tony Ryall announced on Wednesday that a national health board is to be set up to supervise spending by DHBs. An agency will be set up to do administration for all 21 health boards.

Implementation of the changes is to begin immediately.

Salaried Medical Specialists Association president Jeff Brown says the changes will reduce duplication of services.

But the Nurses Organisation says nurses are wary of the proposed changes. Chief executive Geoff Annals says the health sector will need skilled people to make the changes go smoothly.
