Police have released the names of three men believed to have perished in Lake Tekapo after a boating accident.

The South Canterbury men were reported missing on Wednesday night after failing to return from a fishing day trip.

The body of Alexander Haywood, 72, was found on Thursday morning. His son, Anthony Haywood, 46, and Murray Green, 54, have not yet been found.

Police say the men probably got into difficulty on Wednesday afternoon when high winds would have made the lake choppy and boating conditions dangerous.

Police hope to recover the sunken boat on Thursday. Until then, the cause of the accident cannot be established.

Maritime New Zealand is investigating the incident.
