Lifeguards resume beach patrols

3:34 pm on 26 October 2009

Lifeguards began patrolling New Zealand's most popular beaches at Labour weekend, while patrols at the others resume over the next month as the warmer weather arrives.

The patrols continue until Easter, and during school holidays are increased to seven days a week at the more popular hotspots.

Surf Life Saving chief executive Geoff Barry says at least 3,500 volunteer lifeguards patrol more than 80 beaches nationwide.

He reminds beach-goers they need to know the basic safety rules.
