Students can be twittered but can't twitter back

The Qualifications Authority concedes there's some irony in its latest information for students sitting NCEA and scholarship exams next month.

Candidates in the senior secondary school exams can now sign up to receive reminders and updates and rules about the exams through the social networking site Twitter.

An authority spokesperson says there's a certain irony that one of the regular messages going to candidates via their cellphones is that exams are no places for phones.

Twitter messaging is being added to existing communications methods. As well as providing reminders of exam times and rules, it will also alert students to potential problems, such as localised heavy traffic.

Messages will be in plain rather than text language, and students won't be able to twitter back.
