Delays over disposal of old computers

The organiser of a scheme to collect old computers for recycling, fears an investigation by the Ministry of Economic Development could threaten its future.

About 1000 tonnes of computer gear were collected recently, which are now being held in containers in Auckland while the ministry examines their contents.

It's understood the ministry has concerns that toxic waste could be illegally mixed with recycled computer parts.

Organiser Earl Mardle says independent inspectors are being hired at a cost of about $500 per container, in order to keep shipping some waste in the meantime.

Mr Mardle says the costs could make the scheme unviable.
