Death of Wanganui toddler investigated

6:23 pm on 28 October 2009

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a Wanganui toddler.

Karl Richard Arc Perigo-Check, aged 2, died in hospital on Saturday afternoon. A post-mortem revealed the boy had suffered serious internal injuries.

Police are so far ruling out gang connections to the death. The family is said to be cooperating with the investigation.

The boy is the son of Karl Check, who was jailed for his part in the murder of toddler Jhia Te Tua who was shot by a bullet fired into her Wanganui home in 2007.

The shooting was in apparent retaliation for an earlier attack carried out by the girl's father, a member of the Black Power gang.

Check is serving a life sentence with a minimum non-parole period of 15 years and on Wednesday appealed against his conviction.

Judges hearing the case have reserved their decision.
