White collar criminals as well as gangs to be targetted

A new police unit dedicated to seizing criminal profits will target white collar criminals as well as lower-end gangs.

The Assets Recovery Unit will enforce laws that from December will allow police officers to seize assets without needing a conviction.

Deputy Police Commissioner Rob Pope says the police are adopting a very wide approach in the use of their powers.

He says enforcement and proving criminality is the primary focus for the unit, with the complementary element of following the money trail.

Mr Pope says this way they can ensure they are targetting the top end: the suppliers or orchestrators of criminal activity.
