Wait expected for raw milk cheese in NZ

6:49 am on 3 September 2009

Cheese made from raw milk in New Zealand will probably take a couple of years to produce.

The Government announced on Wednesday that new standards will be introduced in October to allow a range of unpasteurised milk products to be made here, as well as imported.

However, the Specialty Cheesemakers Association says it's not going to happen straight away.

President Di Hawkins says the cheese will still need to meet conditions set by the Food Safety Authority.

Every process will need to be licensed by the agency and the standards for this have not been prepared yet.

When production does begin, she expects it will be on a small scale.
