Taranaki locality cut off by slip

Taranaki Regional Council says a massive slip that's cut power to about half a dozen homes near Hawera is the biggest in the region for years.

About 12 residents have been affected after heavy rain caused the 80m wide wall of mud and trees to come down on to Tangahoe Valley Road, 20km north-east of Hawera, on Thursday morning.

Gary Bedford from the council says access to the country back road is tricky but the blockage is being cleared bit by bit.

He says generators were flown in on Friday morning to ensure a water supply.

Mr Bedford hopes the road will be reopened on Friday evening, but it could take up to four days to restore power lines.
