Committal date set over Matamata death

5:08 pm on 2 November 2009

A committal date has been set in Hamilton District Court for a Matamata horse breeder accused of killing his wife.

Gregory Meads, 54, is accused of murdering Helen Meads on their rural property near Matamata in September.

Mrs Meads, 42, died from a single gun shot wound to the upper torso.

Mr Meads has been further remanded in custody for a committal hearing on 2 December.

His lawyer expressed concerns at Monday's hearing over the slowness of the police in providing some disclosure material, including the post mortem examination report and a list of items removed from the crime scene and the Meads' home.

Judge Robert Wolff ordered the material be provided within 14 days and if not, allowed the defence to apply for a change of hearing date, to allow more time to prepare.
