Ombudsmen's office investigates school allegations

1:16 pm on 3 November 2009

The Office of the Ombudsmen is investigating a complaint made by parents of pupils at Hutt Valley High, who say the school didn't properly handle students' allegations of sexual assaults.

The parents had previously complained to the Human Rights Commission and the Education Review Office after the 2007 incident.

Spokesperson for the parents, David Rutherford, says state agencies are not giving the issue of violence in schools the priority it deserves.

Chief Ombudsman Beverley Wakem says the inquiry is limited to the events at Hutt Valley High but if it finds systemic issues the Ombudsman may proceed to a wider investigation.
