The principal of Fraser High School in Hamilton has resigned as an investigation into alleged financial irregularities continues.

Martin Elliott, who has been on paid leave since May, tendered his resignation to the school's limited statutory manager, to take effect immediately.

The investigation relates to possible misuse of public money at the school and privately by Mr Elliott.

The limited statutory manager, John Carlyon, says an inquiry about allegations affecting Mr Elliott and the school is nearing completion and due process is being followed.

Mr Carlyon says a report carried out by accountancy firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers is now in the hands of lawyers and will not be made public.
