Blood test row in Auckland resthomes resolved

3:30 pm on 4 November 2009

The Aged Care Association says it has reached an agreement with Auckland district health boards that no resthome resident is to be expected to leave the facility to have blood tests done.

The association was worried about an apparent move by the DHBs and their laboratory testing firms to have some resthome residents who are mobile attend community collection centres.

The DHBs say they understood this had always been the case, but this was disputed by aged care providers.

Aged Care Association chief executive Martin Taylor says they have now been told the previous arrangements will be reinstated, which is a sensible outcome.

He says residents living independently in retirement village complexes will be expected to go to a collection centre if they are mobile enough to do so.
