Police are now treating the death of a two-year-old boy in Wanganui as a homicide.

Karl Perigo Check died in hospital from serious internal injuries at the end of October.

The toddler was the son of Karl Check, a Mongrel Mob gang member convicted of the 2007 murder of two-year-old girl Jhia Te Tua in Wanganui.

Detective Inspector Chris Bensemann says police are now satisfied that the boy's injuries could not have been caused accidentally.

No arrests have yet been made.
