David Tamihere denied parole

6:36 pm on 10 November 2009

Convicted murderer David Tamihere has been denied parole for the ninth time.

Tamihere, 55, has been in prison now for nearly 20 years, after being found guilty of the murders of Swedish backpackers Urban Hoglin and Heidi Paakkonen in 1990.

The Parole Board says it's declining Tamihere's parole for what it calls "obvious reasons".

The board says it's pleasing to note Tamihere is attending an Adult Sex Offenders Programme at an undisclosed prison, but these are early days.

Its decision says a change in prison after a long and settled period elsewhere has not been without its costs and both Tamihere and his family have suffered because of the move.

The board also says it's disappointing nothing has happened over a course of home leaves it set out for David Tamihere.

His parole will be reviewed again next year.
