Guest nights climbed 3% in the year to September, but are still 2% lower than what they were two years ago.
The increase was driven by international guest nights in short-term commercial accommodation which rose 8% compared with the previous year. Domestic guest nights increased by less than 1%.
Eleven of the 12 regions experienced an increase.
Otago and Canterbury recorded the largest rises, driven by international guest nights.
