Axe in gang incident on Dunedin street

7:46 pm on 12 November 2009

A car with two people inside has been attacked by masked men with an axe in South Dunedin, in an incident involving members of two local gangs.

The attack happened on one of the suburb's main streets, King Edward Street, at about 3.30pm on Thursday.

Sergeant Paul McLaughlan says despite a large number of people on the street, very few people will admit to seeing anything.

He says the people who were attacked didn't want the police to pursue the matter.

Sergeant McLaughlan says officers will keep a close watch on the area throughout the night to ensure matters do not escalate.
