Population growth highest in three years

New Zealand's population has risen by 1.2% in the year to September, the highest annual growth in three years.

New figures released by Statistics New Zealand on Thursday show the population has grown by 51,700 people, to 4,331,600.

The natural increase - the excess of the number of births over deaths - was 34,700.

Permanent and long-term arrivals exceeded departures by 17,000.
