Building industry warns of leaky home 'cowboys'

8:37 pm on 14 November 2009

Unscrupulous operators could be exaggerating the scale of problems in some buildings affected by leaks, the building industry warns.

It says many homeowners who find a leak and fear it could be a major structural problem are either young or elderly and are at risk from what it calls "cowboy" activity.

Building Industry Federation chief executive Bruce Kohn says stories being told within the trade suggest advice being given to some homeowners might not be reputable.

Mr Kohn says the cost of repairs could be inflated, for example owners may be advised to re-clad an entire building when the problem does not warrant such extensive work.
