South Island council may outlaw 'booze cruises'

3:22 pm on 19 November 2009

Waitaki District Council could be the first in the country to outlaw so-called booze cruises, in which groups of people ride around in cars drinking alcohol.

The council is reviewing its liquor ban bylaw, and public submissions have suggested it also consider a ban on open alcohol containers in cars.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy points to a recent incident in which a vanload of youths was pulled over on the outskirts of Oamaru.

He says there were 11 people in the car, and the 16-year-old driver was five and a half times the youth breath alcohol limit.

The council will make a final decision on its bylaw next week.
