PM knows name of entertainer despite suppression order

Prime Minister John Key says he knows the name of an entertainer who admitted an indecent act involving a 16-year-old girl.

An Auckland District Court judge discharged the man without conviction and suppressed his name on the grounds that publishing it would have a detrimental effect on his career.

The Government is considering a Law Commission report which recommends making it tougher to get name suppression.

Mr Key says name suppression is difficult in the modern world and it is often circumvented by the internet and other forms of communication.

In the case of the entertainer, Mr Key says he found out through an unofficial source, by asking someone he thought would know.
