Growing number of violent assaults in jails

9:29 pm on 25 November 2009

Jails are becoming more violent, according to the Corrections Department's latest annual report.

The department's chief executive, Barry Matthews, told Parliament's law and order select committee on Wednesday that there had been 11 prisoner-on-staff assaults during the current financial year, compared with six serious assaults the previous year, and 43 serious prisoner-on prisoner-assaults, compared with 30.

"The increase in serious assaults reflects the challenges that our staff face in managing the increasing number of violent and unpredictable prisoners," Mr Matthews said.
