A group of scientists says there's too much competition for funding among crown research institutes, such as AgResearch and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.
The Association of Scientists, which represents about 250 scientists, has made a submission to a review by a Government-appointed taskforce.
The assocation's president, Dr James Renwick, says it's inefficient to have a large number of Government science organisations competing for a relatively limited pool of funds.
He says a survey of scientists shows many feel they are micro-managed and find the funding system to be overly competitive.
The taskforce is due to report to the Government by early next year.
