81 face charges after Auckland drink-drive blitz

Police at checkpoints in South Auckland breath-tested more than 7,500 people on Saturday, which led to 81 drivers facing court on drink driving charges.

Nine checkpoints were set up in Manukau and Papakura, staffed by 80 officers.

Among those who failed breath tests were an unlicensed 15-year-old and a pregnant woman, police say, while 29 drivers had their licences suspended.

National Road Policing Manager, Superintendent Paula Rose, says the number of women caught over the limit was disturbing.

Police Minister Judith Collins said police will be carrying out a nationwide blitz during the Christmas holiday season to try to deter drink and drug driving which has caused tragedy for so many families.

In the last year, she says, 36,000 people were prosecuted for drink driving.
