New Zealand have beaten Samoa 24-12 in a gripping IRB Sevens World Series final to lift the Dubai title on Saturday.
New Zealand looked on course for a straightforward win in the final when they moved into a 10-0 lead with tries from Tomasi Cama and captain DJ Forbes.
But a great fightback gave Samoa a 14-10 lead, after two converted tries from Reupena Levasa and Mikaele Pesamino early in the second-half. New Zealand replied with tries by Kurt Baker and a second from Cama to take the honours.
DJ Forbes says the victory was a special moment for a team that failed to win a single title last season.
"I've said it before, God rewards perseverance. To go through a year like that and to bounce back as strong as we did tonight was definitely a great occasion," he says.
In the semi final, New Zealand beat Fiji 19-0, after seeing off Kenya 17-14 in a tense quarter-final.
