Rugby league player Benji Marshall has been named Maori sportsperson of the year at the 19th National Maori Sports Awards.

The chief executive of the Maori Sports Awards Trust, Dick Garratt, says Marshall has had outstanding performances in the NRL and the Rugby League World Cup.

The title of top Maori sportswoman went to rugby player Renee Wickliffe for her performance in the Black Ferns, and in sevens and touch.

The awards ceremony, held in Auckland on Sunday, recognised sporting excellence in the national and international arena over the past year.
