Prime Minister John Key says the finishing touches are being put on the deal for free-to-air television rights for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The Government has brokered a joint bid involving Maori Television, Television New Zealand and TV3.

Mr Key says he understands a deal is about to be signed. He says the International Rugby Board has essentially agreed, and one or two final finishing touches are being worked through.

The Prime Minister says New Zealanders will be able to see the opening ceremony, the All Blacks' big matches and the semi-finals and finals on free-to-air TV.
