New statistics have revealed a marked increase in the number of workplace deaths.
The figures, released by Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson, show that 30 people died from accidents at work in the five months from July to November this year.
Eighteen people died in the same period last year, and 15 in 2007.
Ms Wilkinson says the deaths must serve as a wake-up call to all employers and workers that health and safety is very serious.
She has ordered a report from the Department of Labour on the causes of the deaths.
