Single scheme for electricity, gas complaints

From April next year, every electricity and gas consumer will be able to take complaints they cannot resolve with their retailers and distributors to an independent disputes resolution service.

The service will extend the existing Electricity and Gas Complaints Commissioner scheme to cover every electricity and gas retailer and distributor, including Transpower.

It replaces four different schemes with a single system for resolution of consumer complaints, which will be free of charge to consumers.

The Electricity Commission and Gas Industry Company said in a joint statement on Thursday that it was imperative every consumer had ready access to a robust complaints-resolution process.
