Staff fear DHB merger will compromise healthcare

8:21 pm on 11 December 2009

Senior medical staff at Southland Hospital say a proposed merger of the Otago and Southland district health boards will compromise the healthcare of local people.

Submissions on the proposal to combine the DHBs close on Friday.

The Senior Medical Staff Committee at Southland Hospital in Invercargill has written an open letter opposing the move.

Committee chair Chuck Lueker says any merger must not mean health care is compromised.

Dr Lueker says Invercargill is a remote location and it is already difficult to recruit staff.
