The Recreational Fishing Council is hailing the announcement new fishery enforcement officers will be active over summer.
Nine fulltime officers graduated from the National Police College in Porirua on Friday, and another 20 honorary fishery officers are to graduate soon.
The officers will be stationed at popular fishing areas throughout the North Island during the Christmas break.
Keith Ingram, of the Recreational Fishing Council, believes more officers will deter people from exceeding catch limits.
He describes people who take more than their allowable catch as "plain fish thieves".
