Senior midwife faulted after fatal breech birth

12:32 pm on 16 December 2009

A senior independent midwife has been faulted for her role in an emergency birth during which a baby died in Porirua last year.

The birth was an undiagnosed feet first, or breech presentation, during which the baby boy suffocated.

An independent review of maternity services in Wellington was ordered and Health and Disability Commissioner Ron Paterson has issued his report into the incident.

Mr Paterson says a newly graduated midwife acted correctly in calling in her mentor and colleague but the senior midwife was wrong to refuse to examine the mother, as requested by the junior midwife, to help explain unusual aspects of the birth.
