New crime strategy expected to bring little change

A South Auckland community group says prevention measures in a new Government crime strategy amount to yet more policy being dumped on frontline agencies which will see little change.

Justice Minister Simon Power says the new approach acknowledges that more needs to be done to address the drivers of crime, with early intervention a key focus.

No money is being committed, but Mr Power says Government agencies will work together to address the factors that lead to crime.

The Mangere East Family Service Centre says the only thing new out of Thursday's announcement was the person presenting it.

Director Peter Sykes is sceptical there will be much change until ministerial representatives come "face-to-face" with agencies in the community.
